.sj is the Internet country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) for Svalbard and Jan Mayen

Svalbard and Jan Mayen are designated as two parts of Norway located in the Arctic Ocean under seperate jurisdictions. Though the archipelago of Svalbard is under the full sovereignty of Norway, it has a special status recognized by the Spitsbergen Treaty; this results in certain obligations and some differences in administration and international agreements by the Norwegian government. This includes the fact that Svalbard is not covered by the Schengen Agreement which applies to the rest of Norway (including Jan Mayen). Furthermore, immigrants are allowed to work and live in Svalbard without a visa.

As for Jan Mayen, it is an integrated territory of Norway, where none of the special considerations applied to Svalbard apply. From 1930 to 1994 it was administered by the governor of Svalbard, and since 1995 it has been administered from the mainland by the county governor of Nordland. This means that Jan Mayen does not have any immediate geographic or otherwise administrative connection to Svalbard.

The .sj country code top-level domain name for Svalbard and Jan Mayen is operated by UNINETT Norid and is sponsered by the Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority. Currently, the .sj domain name is not used as Svalbard and Jan Mayen are parts of Norway. Instead, in Svalbard, resgistrants use .no and .com, as they do in Norway.

To register a domain name for Svalbard and Jan Mayen one must have a local presence in Norway, be an organization (one of the certain forms of organization recognised in the Brønnøysund Register Centre) and it must be ensured that the domain name is technically operative. Domain name holders are allowed to register for up to twenty domain names and no more. Domain names are permitted to have the characters as followed: a-z, 0-9, hyphens and the national characters. The first and last characters of the domain name must be a letter or digit.

Important Note:
Some domain names may be classified by the registry as a premium domain name and will command a higher price. If you request a premium domain name we will contact you before completing your order.

In addition, the registry may at any time reserve domain names from registration or the sale may be restricted to comply with ICANN requirements.
