Used in Colombia; talk of capitalizing on similarity to .com and .co.uk and selling second-level registrations worldwide never materialized
The Internet Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) for Colombia is .co. It has been managed by .CO Internet since 2009 when the company won a Bid process during the end of the year, run by the Colombian Government.
From July 2010, it will be possible for anyone to register for a .co domain name, Colombian residence will not be necessary. It will be given on a 'first come, first served' basis for the first-level .co, and the second-level .com.co, .net.co and .nom.co. This eliminates any potential disputes between two parties.
- edu.co : Only Educational entities that are recognised by the Minister of Education in Colombia can register under this domain name.
- .gov.co : Only Government entities within Colombia can register under this domain name.
- .mil.co : Only those part of the Military Force within Colombia can register under this domain name.
- .org.co : Only non-commercial organizations based within Colombia can register under this domain name.
Certain criteria must be met when registering for domain names under the ccTLD .co. These are as follows:
- Letters of the Roman Alphabet (a-z) can be used.
- Digits 0-9 can be used.
- A hyphen (-) can be used. It must not be the first or last character of the domain name.
- Spaces are not acceptable.
- The maximum amount of characters in a domain name is 63, yet 24 is recommended for practical reasons.
Some domain names may be classified by the registry as a premium domain name and will command a higher price. If you request a premium domain name we will contact you before completing your order.
In addition, the registry may at any time reserve domain names from registration or the sale may be restricted to comply with ICANN requirements.
"co" is also frequently used as a second-level domain within other country-code domains, in which registrants (usually companies) may register second-level domains of the form .co.xx, where xx is the ccTLD. Israel (.co.il), United Kingdom (.co.uk), ew Zealand (.co.nz), Japan (.co.jp), South Korea (.co.kr) and Cook Islands (.co.ck) are examples. Some other country codes use "com" instead, such as Australia (.com.au), Mexico (.com.mx) and Taiwan (.com.tw); this includes Colombia itself, which uses .com.co.
Around the year 2000 when many country-code domains were being remarketed as worldwide generic domains, there was some talk of allowing second-level registrations in .co for registrants worldwide in order to capitalize on the similarity of this name to .com and to the above-noted use of "co" as a second-level domain in other country codes. However, a Court order prohibited Universidad de los Andes from doing so, and registration remained limited to third-level domains and to Colombian registrants until 2010, when .CO Internet took over the administration of the Colombian zone.
